Let me make one thing clear, Bill Belichick flat out STOLE Dwayne Allen from the Indianapolis Colts. Now that the Colts are under a new regime with Grigson gone, Belichick decided to swoop in and strike a deal with Indy. And boy did he…
In the trade for Allen, the Patriots also got a 6th round draft pick. In exchange, the Patriots sent Indy a 4th rounder. A masterful move by Belichick.
Here’s what Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had to say about Allen prior to playing him back in 2015.
“He’s an extremely good player, both in the run and the pass game. Thus guy is a big, physical, strong guy. You can see in yesterday’s game where he also has the ability to post up against tougher situations like in the red area and be able to box out and catch touchdowns and situational plays.”
Plain and simple, Belichick loves this guy, and if he loves this guy, he’s going to turn him into a stud here in New England. Allen is the missing piece that Bennett left, and will also be great in tandem with Gronk.
Patriots offensive coordinator also spoke highly of Allen in 2015 saying “[He’s a] Strong tight end in both the run and the pass game…has some vertical speed.”
The Colts signed Allen last year for 4 years and $29.3 million, they paid him $12 million last year (3 yr $17.3m remaining) and traded him for a 4th round draft pick. Needless to say, Belichick is laughing all the way to the bank on this deal.
