Earlier this morning, the New England Patriots signed free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Details of the contract are now known.
According to Adam Schefter, the deal is for 5 years $65 million dollars including $40 million in guaranteed money. Huge contract.

Big money spent on a free agent there by the Patriots. Not something they usually do. This money will not sit well with Malcolm Butler, this contract here could cause major issues in negotiations with Butler and the Pats. Especially $40 million guaranteed. I did not think Belichick had this type of deal in him, especially with a player that they didn’t even meet prior to signing, clearly Belichick likes this guy.
I would love the Patriots to keep both Butler and Gilmore. They would instantly have the best corners in the league. In my opinion, Hightower is priority 1, but Butler is right after him. If the Patriots do let Butler sign somewhere else, because the first round tender, they would receive a first round pick in return. So Gilmore and a first rounder for Butler isn’t the end of the world either… Power chess by Belichick
